OPPOSITION URGES ESTABLISHING COMMISSION TO INVESTIGATE PULJIZ CASE

ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina) - Representatives of all opposition clubs ofdeputies in the Croatian parliament on Wednesday urged parliamentspeaker Vladimir Seks to add to the agenda of the ongoing session arequest to establish a commission to investigate the behaviour ofCounter-intelligence Agency (POA) agents during their interrogation ofreporter Helena Puljiz.
ZAGREB, Dec 1 (Hina) - Representatives of all opposition clubs of deputies in the Croatian parliament on Wednesday urged parliament speaker Vladimir Seks to add to the agenda of the ongoing session a request to establish a commission to investigate the behaviour of Counter-intelligence Agency (POA) agents during their interrogation of reporter Helena Puljiz.

Despite the fact that last night Seks said for Croatian Television that parliament would not discuss the opposition's request because of formal reasons, the Social Democrats (SDP), the Peasant Party (HSS), the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), the People's Party (HNS) and the Party of Rights (HSP) believe that the Sabor should discuss the case.

They maintain that the findings of the Committee on Home Affairs and National Security about POA agents

not having acted unlawfully in the Puljiz case did not remove doubts regarding the lawfulness of the agency's activities.

Addressing reporters in the parliament, Sime Lucin of the SDP said that the commission should remove dilemmas from the reports of the Council for the Civil Control of Security Services and the Office of the National Security Council, so as to punish the unlawful conduct of the POA.

"This issue deserves the full attention of parliament, particularly in light of the misunderstanding between President Mesic and Prime Minister Sanader," Lucin said.

Ante Markov of the HSS is confident that a parliamentary debate on the case would strengthen the role of the Council for the Civil Control of Security Services.

"The HSP advocates establishing full truth so that the case does not become a subject of the election campaign," Pero Kovacevic said, adding that "it is sad that President Mesic had countersigned regulations which were violated in five instances in the Puljiz case".

Damir Kajin of the IDS said that "it is sad that PM Sanader is becoming hostage to the intelligence community by unreasonably protecting (POA chief) Josko Podbevsek". He also urged reorganising the entire intelligence community, adding that if he won the elections, Mesic would have the mandate to do so.

Srecko Ferencak of the HNS said that a Croatian Television reporter was under investigation by security services.

Ferencak believes that the Committee on Home Affairs did not ensure parliamentary control of security services, which he said would be possible only if the opposition took over the committee.
