TWO OPPOSITION LEADERS COMMENT ON SANADER'S ACCUSATIONS

ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) chief ZlatkoTomcic and a senior official of the Croatian People's Party (HNS),Radimir Cacic, have said they are not against the establishment of aparliamentary commission of inquiry which would examine whether theywere in conflict of interest while they were state officials duringthe previous coalition government.
ZAGREB, Nov 22 (Hina) - Croatian Peasant Party (HSS) chief Zlatko Tomcic and a senior official of the Croatian People's Party (HNS), Radimir Cacic, have said they are not against the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry which would examine whether they were in conflict of interest while they were state officials during the previous coalition government.

They agreed, however, that the announcement of incumbent Prime Minister Ivo Sanader that he would insist on the establishment of such a commission, was "a primitive threat issued through the media".

On Sunday evening, during a Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) convention in Split, Sanader said that he would request in his capacity as HDZ leader rather than PM that the commission be established so as to probe the cases of Cacic and Tomcic while they were in power.

"I can hardly wait to see the formation of that commission so that the primitive media campaign launched by Sanader (against me) can be stopped," the HSS leader told reporters in the parliament on Monday.

He went on to say that it was not in Sanader's interest to clarify everything given that "he could use his position of Prime Minister if he really wanted to do anything."

Cacic added that Sanader, as the PM, had the right and obligation to use all institutions and bodies of authorities, including the police and state prosecutors, to clarify any murky case.

Explaining that a parliamentary commission of enquiry is actually the instrument which the opposition usually uses, Cacic said that his party would also ask for a commission of enquiry to be set up to examine Sanader's and Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul's business activities since 1990.

During the 2000-2003 coalition government, Tomcic was Parliament Speaker and Cacic Construction Minister.

Following a recent statement by Slaven Letica, the presidential candidate supported by the Party of Rights (HSP), who said that he visited the Chief State Prosecutor, who showed him a package of files he said referred to "Cacic's financial wrongdoing in road-construction", a deputy public prosecutor, Lazo Pajic, told Hina on Monday that the Office of the State Prosecutor had for some time been investigating possible irregularities in road construction and that it would decide on the matter after it received reports compiled by the Office of the State Auditor and the Tax Administration.

"Following media reports on alleged irregularities in the construction of the Zagreb-Rijeka highway, a file was compiled in February. After the question raised by Slaven Letica, a member of parliament, the preliminary investigation was expanded to the construction of other highways," Pajic added.

The police have collected extensive documentation in August and September, sending reports to the Zagreb Office of the State Prosecutor, which is still analysing the reports. The police have pressed no charges and nobody has been under suspicion so far, he said.
