ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - Croatian Justice Minister Vesna Skare Ozbolt on Tuesday received a delegation of former employees of the Vukovar-based rubber and footwear factory "Borovo", who demand recognition of their pensionable years of service and their right to severance pay, ministry officials said. #L#

The delegation of former "Borovo" workers, most of whom are of Serb nationality, informed the minister about their demands and proposals for the solution of their problems.

The meeting was organised at the proposal of the government which the minister will inform about the talks, ministry spokeswoman Vesna Dovranic said.

She added that this was a working meeting, but would not comment on any details.

The association gathers some 3,700 former employees, mostly of Serb nationality, who at the time of the Serb occupation of Vukovar stayed in the town and continued working in the factory.

As they failed to report to the factory's exiled management in Zagreb, they were collectively fired in December 1991.

They consider their sacking unlawful and demand the right to severance pay and pensionable years of service.

They claim that they were being discriminated against on the grounds of their nationality, which was why they staged a peaceful protest rally in Vukovar on September 21.

To support their claims, they say that 1,476 former employees, mostly of Croat nationality, who left Vukovar during its occupation, were able to exercise their labour rights and were granted severance pay.

The Belgrade-based daily "Politika" of today reports that Croatia's refusal to solve the problem of those workers confirms suspicion about the existence of double standards towards its citizens.
