ZAGREB, Oct 5 (Hina) - Unions of workers in the education sector and
science on Tuesday staged a day-long strike in elementary and high schools,
faculties, and science institutions to draw attention to what they say is an
untenable situation in their sectors, and to the fact that their salaries are
12 percent lower than in other public services. The unions said between 60,000 and 70,000 employees would take part in
the strike and wear badges reading "Let's Move Croatia For Knowledge and Good
Education".
Although the unionists called on children not to come to school, the
Education, Science and Sports Ministry urged them to attend classes and
teachers and professors to come to work.
The strike is supported by all unions of employees in the education
sector.
A decision to go on strike was made after a reconciliation with
representatives of the government last week failed. Eighty-seven percent of
workers in primary, secondary and higher education supported the strike at a
referendum.
