ZAGREB, Oct 10 (Hina) - The powers supply and distribution systems of the south-eastern and continental parts of Europe were integrated into a single system on Sunday and the technical part of the job was completed shortly before 10:30 hours, Croatian Power Supply (HEP) company spokesman Radimir Milisic confirmed.

The reconnection of the south-east European system to that of the continental part of Europe started at 7:30 hours and shortly before 10:30 hours all five 400-kilovolt power transmission lines (in Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina) were reconnected.

The technical part of the job was thus completed without problems. According to international standards, one day should pass before the task can be considered successfully completed, Milisic said.

The demanding project was coordinated by the HEP dispatching centre in Zagreb.

The united power supply and distribution grid was separated 13 years ago at the start of the Serb aggression on Croatia, with the destruction of the Ernestinovo transformer station in eastern Croatia and the transformer station in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Today's reconnection, which experts consider to be the event of the year in the power industry, will create one of the largest synchronised systems in the world (around 400 million people), expand possibilities of trade in power and make it possible for south-east European countries to integrate with the European Union market.
