ZAGREB, Sept 29 (Hina) - About 200 clients of the savings and loan
cooperative 'Varazdinski Cekin' on Wednesday staged a protest rally in front of
the Croatian parliament building in Zagreb, in a bid to inform the public and
the government of the cooperative's financial wrongdoings and the irresponsible
conduct of state bodies. The demonstrators accused the former government of allowing the
cooperative's managers to transfer the savings deposits of more than 1,500
Varazdin citizens to other companies' bank accounts. As a result of those
deals, the clients lost over 100 million kuna.
The protestors said that the cooperative had operated unlawfully from
1996 to 1999, when the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was in power, which was
why they urged the incumbent (HDZ-led) government to help them obtain
damages.
