DONJA BISTRA, Oct 2 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Saturday local elections would be held in May 2005, within the legal deadline, dismissing what he said was speculation that local elections might be called earlier.

Sanader visited Donja Bistra near Zagreb to attend a ceremony marking the completion of road construction in the municipality.

He advocated further decentralisation and respecting the principle of subsidiarity, namely ensuring that the number of municipalities is not determined by the state or the counties. Croatia has about 430 municipalities.

Also attending the ceremony were Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, Deputy PM Jadranka Kosor, Culture Minister Bozo Biskupic, and several members of parliament.
