SPLIT, Sept 11 (Hina) - By signing the latest arrangement with the IMF, the incumbent Croatian government has proven that the opposition was right to claim that the Croatian Democratic Union was not able to govern the country and solve the current difficult situation, Social Democratic Party (SDP) vice-president Zeljka Antunovic said at a news conference in Split on Saturday.

The former government had laid good foundations and set the right course for Croatia's development, Antunovic said, adding that the arrangement made it clear that an increase in salaries and pensions was not possible. The announced fast-track privatisation will result in more failed projects, because privatisation cannot be prepared and carried out in such a short period of time as stated by the government, she added.

Commenting on claims that it would have been possible to complete the Dugopolje-Sestanovac section of the Zagreb-Dubrovnik highway if the construction contract had been awarded directly to Bechtel instead of inviting bids, Antunovic said that invitations to bid did not slow down road construction.

Asked whether her party would support the presidential candidacy of Stjepan Mesic, Antunovic said the SDP still had not made an official decision, but that "Mesic is already the winner, so the SDP is not interested in nominating its own candidate".

The policy of the incumbent president is in line with the SDP's policy, Antunovic said, adding that the SDP would probably support Mesic's candidacy.

SDP MP Sime Lucin said that the HDZ was pursuing an arrogant and revenge-seeking policy, replacing staff that it did not consider loyal, regardless of their competence.
