Ethnic Hungarians report incidents over Christmas holidays in Serbia

SUBOTICA, Dec 30 (Hina) - Representatives of ethnic Hungarians have said that several ethnically motivated incidents happened over the Christmas holidays in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina.

The leader of the Vojvodina Hungarians' Alliance, Imre Kern, said on Friday that the target of vandal attacks were national and religious symbols of Catholics and local Hungarians.

The gravest incident occurred when straw from the Nativity scene set in a chapel in Subotica was set on fire after vandals hurled lit candles inside overnight.

"Damage is not big, but this shows that extremism in Serbia has not been curbed yet," Kern told a news conference in Subotica. He added that the police were searching for the perpetrators.

Commenting on other incidents, Kern said that windows of the Alliance offices in Novi Sad had been smashed and that acts of provocation had been reported in a Vojvodina village during Christmas Midnight Mass.

The Catholic Archbishop of Belgrade, Stanislav Hocevar, told Hina that he had heard only of the chapel incident.

Wherever Catholic faithful were disturbed during the Christmas holidays, this should be treated as uncivilised acts which deserve condemnation, the Catholic dignitary said.

The Serb Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas according to the Julian Calendar on 7 January.
