SUBOTICA, Dec 20 (Hina) - Councils of national minorities in Vojvodina on Tuesday requested the appointment of a new leadership at Radio and Television Novi Sad (RTNS) which would professionally draw up a project to transform the medium into a regional public service for citizens.

The Councils said RTNS was "falling apart" and requested the Serbian government to complete the separation of RTNS from Serbian Radio and Television and define its status.

The request for the establishment of a public medium service in the northern Serbian province of Vojvodina was also signed by the Croatian National Council in Serbia and Montenegro (HNV), which said it was very dissatisfied with how RTNS covered and reported about the Croat community in Vojvodina.

HNV president Josip Pekanovic said the Croat community was bitter about the fact that a Croatian show was taken off the air and that its authors were on trial.

He said the problem of television reporting in Croatian was the biggest, but added that other national minorities in Vojvodina had similar experiences.

News in national minority languages on the largest media company in Vojvodina will be an important topic of a forthcoming meeting between the Serbian government and representatives of national minority councils.

Unions of employees today joined the request for the transformation of RTNS, claiming the company was operating in disastrous technical conditions, that the best personnel had left and that pays were low.
