ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - The club of deputies in the Croatian parliament representing ethnic minorities has expressed surprise with a statement by deputies of the Independent Democratic Serb Party (SDSS) opposing an initialed agreement with Austria.

Minority deputies Zdenka Cuhnil, Jene Adam, Semso Tankovic and Nikola Mak issued a statement with the approval of the club's head, Furio Radin, expressing "surprise and disappointment" with the position of Serb deputies.

The agreement on the payment of compensation to Austrian citizens whose property was seized by the former Yugoslav authorities is "a legitimate act, based on the amended law providing for the payment of compensation for property seized under communist rule," reads the statement.

"The agreement does not bring into question the foundations of the Croatian state, the post-war legal and political order in Europe or the anti-fascist heritage as claimed by SDSS deputies," it is noted in the statement.

Commenting on the SDSS's claim that the policy towards ethnic minorities cannot be turned to the past, but the present and future, the deputies said "every minority policy must take into account the need to correct injustices done in the past as the only way to have a good minority policy in the present and future".

The deputies said they particularly regretted the fact that the SDSS had made its statement public without the knowledge of the club of ethnic minorities, of which it is a member.
