The Council plans to display the minority's symbols - the coat of arms and the flag - on public holidays and four holidays observed by this community, which rejects its Croatian origins.
Asked to comment on the news that the language of the Bunjevci was not included in the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, which is soon to be adopted by the Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro, Council President Nikola Babic said that the Council would do all in its power to make it possible for Bunjevci children to study their native language.
According to the last population census, there are 20,012 Bunjevci in Serbia. Along the National Council as their umbrella organisation, they also have their newspapers and special programmes on Novi Sad television.
Representatives of the Croatian national minority in Serbia claim that the Bunjevci are a regional Croatian ethnic group that refuses to recognise that.
