Jessen Petersen said on Monday that the beginning of the process of solving
Kosovo's status was a very important step towards the stabilisation of the
western Balkans.Petersen reiterated that the decision on Kosovo's status would be made
by the UN Security Council, stressing there would be no referendum on the
issue.
Petersen said this at a news conference held in Pristina ahead of the
arrival of the UN chief negotiator for Kosovo's status, former Finnish
president Martti Ahtisaari. Ahtisaari is expected to arrive late this
afternoon when the process of defining the final status of Kosovo will
officially start.
