PRISTINA, Nov 12 (Hina) - Slovene President Janez Drnovsek said in the Kosovo Serb enclave of Gracanica on Saturday that Kosovo was already independent and that local Serbs should be given protection.

Speaking to reporters after a visit to the Serb Orthodox monastery of Gracanica, Drnovsek said Serb religious and cultural monuments should be given an exterritorial status.

Drnovsek's office said in a statement that his visit to the Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo had been agreed with the leadership of the Serb Orthodox Church in Belgrade and Kosovo, after the authorities of Serbia and Montenegro cancelled his visit to Belgrade, dissatisfied with his proposal regarding the final status of Kosovo which is based on the position that Kosovo's independence is the only realistic possibility.

The Kosovo government was not satisfied with Drnovsek's proposal either, claiming that it contained less than what the government demanded.

Kosovo Prime Minister Bajram Kosumi, who did not meet Drnovsek today, said the Slovene president was on a private visit to Kosovo and that he had not been invited by the Kosovo government.

Kosumi, however, said that he appreciated Drnovsek and the Slovene government's assistance as well as Slovenia's previous help in efforts to solve the Kosovo question. He expressed hope that Ljubljana would support Kosovo in the EU.

Drnovsek met in Pristina today with President Ibrahim Rugova and officials of the UN Mission in Kosovo and acquainted them with his proposal for the final status of the province.
