A TV crew followed Anton Petrovic and Tamara Rozov as they visited the Hrelic fair in search of black and white photos of anonymous people.
Reporter Nick Hawton said he had never seen a similar project in his long career as a journalist.
He said it was sad that people threw away old photographs and that the project deserved every accolade because it tried to save mementos. This is something invaluable, he added.
A feature on the project was also done for the radio show "Europe Today".
"Not even in our dreams did we expect that the project would attract international interest. The media attention only urges us to expand the project also outside the Internet. We also intend to stage a live exhibition of huge posters based on discarded photographs," said Petrovic.
Skarabej.com is a unique project which aims to preserve old family photos from family albums or photos which have been thrown away. Everyone may join in the project by uploading their photos on the website.
More than 2,000 pictures have been collected to date and half have been put on the website.
