Speaking to reporters after separate talks with Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova, Premier Bajram Kosumi and Serb representative Oliver Ivanovic, Schaefer said that a solution to the status of the UN-administered province should contribute to the stability of the region and that negotiations should start immediately.
Electronic media in Pristina said that the Contact Group had sent the UN Secretary-General, the European Union and the authorities in Pristina and Belgrade a document containing six basic principles for resolving the status of Kosovo.
Underlining the importance of reaching a negotiated settlement, the document called on all the parties concerned to form negotiating teams and ensure an active role for the Serbs and other ethnic communities in Kosovo.
Meanwhile, the US Undersecretary of State for Political Issues, Nicholas Burns, has said that NATO will use force should talks on the final status of Kosovo be violently disrupted, Voice of America reported on Wednesday.
Speaking in the US Senate on Tuesday, Burns said that the US would remain neutral in the talks on the future of Kosovo, which are to start in the coming weeks, but noted that although the US was working on a peaceful settlement NATO should be ready to intervene in case of an attempt to obstruct the talks by violence.
