The indictment against Beqaj was confirmed on October 29, 2004, and he was transferred to the tribunal's Detention Unit in the Hague district of Scheveningen on November 5. At his initial appearance before judges, he pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Beqaj was charged with intimidating and bribing a prosecution witness in the case of his relative Isak Musliu, one of the three former leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army who are on trial in The Hague.
The indictment, containing charges of contempt, attempted contempt and incitement to contempt of the tribunal, says that from February 2003 to October 2004 Beqaj, individually and in concert with others, interfered with the administration of justice by threatening, intimidating, offering a bribe to or otherwise interfering with witnesses or potential witnesses in the Limaj et al. case.
