SARAJEVO, Feb 5 (Hina) - Top officials of Bosnia-Herzegovina and many citizens of Sarajevo on Saturday gathered in front of the Markale market centre in downtown Sarajevo to commemorate the 11th anniversary of a massacre when 68 persons died and over a hundred were wounded in the Serb shelling of the Bosnian capital.

On 5 February 1994, Serb forces that besieged Sarajevo shot a mortar shell at the Markale food and vegetable indoor market killing 68 Sarajevans and wounding 142 people who were in the market hall.

On the front wall of the market building there is a memorial plaque with names of the victims of the 1994 attack.

Addressing today's commemoration, a member of the Bosnian three-man Presidency, Sulejman Tihic, said that it was necessary to speak about such events not only for the sake of the past but also for the sake of the future so that evil would not happen again.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) has admitted evidence which the prosecution produced in the trial of Bosnian Serb General Stanislav Galic, accused of many attacks against civilians in Sarajevo, including the Markale massacre.

Tihic said today that during the Serb siege of the Bosnian capital, which lasted over 1,000 days, more than 12,000 Sarajevans were killed including over one thousand children. Perpetrators of jhose crimes have to be found and punished, said the Bosnian Muslim leader.
