During a visit to Pristina on Monday, Rehn said that Kosovo was on the right track with regard to the implementation of standards set by the international community, and conveyed the EU's support ahead of the start of talks on Kosovo's final status.
Rehn met today with Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova, Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj, the deputy chief of the UN mission in the province, Larry Rossin, and local Albanian and Serb leaders.
Kosovo should become a tolerant, democratic and multiethnic society in which all citizens will have the right to live, work and move freely, independent of their nationality, Rehn said.
The EU official also called on Washington and Brussels to reach agreement on a joint position regarding the future of Kosovo.
After Pristina, Rehn will visit Belgrade.
