The Giorno daily ran the article headlined "An Avalanche of Votes for Mesic" in which it reported that Mesic gained a considerably larger number of votes than his rival, Jadranka Kosor of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ).

The press in Slovenia and Serbia-Montenegro reported today that Mesic's victory of the presidential polls was not a surprise.
The Ljubljana-based Dnevnik said on Monday that Mesic was for Croatian voters "a president who has a crucial role in transforming the country in a stable parliamentary democracy" and that in his next five-year term in office he would be "a supervisor of the country's admission to the EU".
The electronic media in Serbia-Montenegro said Mesic's victory was expected.
The local press quoted reports of foreign agencies on this topic.
The Politika and Blic dailes released reports of their correspondents who mentioned some irregularities during the voting.
