ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - Presidential candidates Jadranka Kosor and Stjepan Mesic took part in a dual in the media -- on Obiteljski Radio and RTL Television -- for the first time on Monday evening.

The two candidates have different standpoints on home affairs but they agree in most parts on foreign affairs, notably on the process of Croatia's drawing closer to the European Union.

Both Kosor and Mesic are confident they would win the elections in the second election round.

Both candidates said if they won the elections they would advocate the economic growth, a better standard of living and an increase of the employment rate.

Commenting on the Druzba Adria project, Kosor said that if elected president one of her first moves would be to request the government to withdraw from the project. Mesic said, however, that before making any decision the public should be given an expert study on the project's impact on the environment.

The two candidates also have a different standpoint on the process of Croatia's drawing closer to the European Union. Kosor said Croatia would be ready to enter NATO as early as 2007 while Mesic said Croatia did not need to rush and stressed the country needed to adopt NATO standards first.

Asked whether Croatia's judiciary was able to process war crimes Kosor answered in the affirmative and stressed the need for the solving of backlog cases, while Mesic said that national courts were only partially ready to process war crimes and added that an integral judicial was necessary.

The two candidates also have opposite standpoints on the abortion issue. Mesic believes that women should have a choice and that they must not be stripped off this right by the law. Kosor on the other hand believes that life must be protected and she advocates a referendum on that issue.

Both Kosor and Mesic are confident Croatia would meet all criteria for full EU membership by 2007, namely 2008.

Asked what would they do if they saw retired Croatian General Ante Gotovina, wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal at The Hague, Kosor said probably nothing while Mesic said he would remind Gotovina about his statement that he recognised the Hague tribunal and Croatian institutions and that he would call on him to defend his honor and the honor of Croatian Homeland War soldiers before the tribunal.
