ZAGREB, Jan 2 (Hina) - By 17:00 hrs Sunday, 8,396 voters went to the 15 polling stations set up in six German cities for Croatian presidential elections, which is a lower turnout than expected, officials at the Croatian embassy in Berlin and consulates in the country reported.

The highest turnout - 2,537 - was reported in Stuttgart, while the lowest turnout - 640 - was reported in Hamburg.

The voting proceeded peacefully, the embassy reported.

German media also reported a low turnout at polling stations in Croatia this morning and in the early afternoon.

Welt am Sonntag highlighted the fact that for the first time since Croatia gained independence there were no foreign observers at polling stations in the country, which is interpreted as a sign that Croatia has achieved a high level of democratisation.
