Glavas denies having begged Seks to stop war crimes investigation against him

OSIJEK, June 15 (Hina) - Independent member of parliament Branimir Glavas on Thursday commented on a media article in which Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said that Glavas had begged him to stop a war crimes investigation against him, saying he had "never asked, let alone begged Seks for anything".

Glavas was commenting on an article in Nacional weekly in which Seks stated that Glavas had begged him through a mediator to stop the charges against him.

Speaking to the press in the eastern city of Osijek, Glavas said he would react every time he was mentioned "so obscenely" although "I am aware that attention is being paid to my statements so that I could be placed in custody during the trial".

Glavas said Seks should give back all the decorations and honours he was awarded for his role in the Homeland War given that he had renounced that role, and that Seks should also give up his general's rank if he had not taken active part in the war.

Asked how long his trial would last, Glavas said "about six months most probably".

Zagreb County Court investigating judge Zdenko Posavec launched an investigation on Tuesday against Glavas and Krunoslav Fehir for their roles in war crimes against civilians committed in Osijek in 1991.

In two interviews with the investigating judge, Glavas rejected all the allegations of ill-treatment of three Serb civilians and murder of two. He also dismissed the charge that at the start of the war he had his own paramilitary forces in Osijek.

Fehir, a former member of the battalion that was under Glavas's command in 1991, is suspected of physically abusing and shooting a civilian prisoner. He confessed to the crime, saying that Glavas had given him the order to do it.

Glavas dismissed Fehir's accusation, calling him a liar and a mental case.
