30 May is also celebrated as Memorial Day in commemoration to 30 May 1990 when the first multiparty Sabor was established after democratic elections. The first Sabor Speaker was Zarko Domljan.

The then parliament appointed Stjepan Mesic as the chairman of the Sabor's Executive Council, namely as the premier of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, and it appointed Franjo Tudjman as the President of the Presidency of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, which was still a part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY).

The constitution of the multiparty parliament in Zagreb formally brought an end to the 50-year-long era of the Communist rule and paved the way to Croatia's independence.

The incumbent parliament will hold a reception on Wednesday, 31 May, to celebrate its Memorial Day.
