International Conference on justice and regional cooperation starts in Belgrade

BELGRADE, June 13 (Hina) - The chairman of Serbia's National Council for cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal, Rasim Ljajic, has said that the peoples and countries in the former Yugoslavia are still far from real reconciliation and that they need to find a way to the truth and justice, which is why Serbia must "intensify and complete cooperation with the Hague tribunal."

"It is our moral, political and international obligation to put an end to that problem and have all indictees of the Hague tribunal transferred to the tribunal," Ljajic said, stressing the readiness of the Serbian authorities to arrest and transfer Ratko Mladic.

Speaking at an international conference on transition justice and regional cooperation in Belgrade, Ljijic also said that the process of doing away with the past should not be conducted only by nongovernmental associations but also by the Serbian authorities.

The three-day conference, organised by the UN development programme "Transitional Justice: Regional Initiatives and Cooperation", is aimed at considering the existing and possible regional initiatives and cooperation in this area. Participating in the conference were representatives of the governments, judicial bodies, civil society organisations and associations gathering the families of missing persons of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo (UNMIK).
