BELGRADE, June 6 (Hina) - Serbian President Boris Tadic notified the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe on Tuesday that Serbia is the legal successor of the State Union of Serbia and the Montenegro and requested that the state's name be changed to the Republic of Serbia.

In letters sent to the three international addresses, Tadic said the continuity was based on the State Union's Constitutional Charter and that agreement on this had been reached with the Montenegrin side.

The Foreign Ministry of the former State Union and now Serbia said in a statement that it had informed foreign governments and international organisations that Serbia is the legal successor of the State Union.

As of today, the State Union's diplomatic offices are Serbia's diplomatic offices. The diplomatic missions' Montenegrin staff were informed that they must return home by June 30. The statement said that Serbian insignia would be introduced in all diplomatic and consular offices in the near future.

The Serbian parliament today adopted a decision under which Serbia, as the successor of the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro, took over its powers.
