Solana visited Belgrade for the first time since Montenegro's May 21 referendum on independence from the state union with Serbia.
He said the aim of his meetings with Serbian officials was to convey to the citizens of Serbia that the EU cared for Serbia and that Serbia had a place in the European family.
Solana said he was pleased with Tadic's conduct and responsibility and that it was very important for Serbia and Montenegro to have a constructive relationship.
He said Serbia would inherit the legal continuity of the state union and that open dialogue would be the best option for settling the many technical and political issues ahead.
Tadic said after the talks that all democratic forces should unite as the best guarantee that Serbia would overcome all the obstacles on the road to EU membership at a faster pace.
He said he acknowledged the official results of the Montenegrin referendum and expected the Serbian and Montenegrin governments to start dealing with the issues of future relations.
Tadic underlined that the referendum was an opportunity to show Serbia's European orientation and that it wanted the best relations with Montenegro.
