ZAGREB, June 12 (Hina) - Croatia will recognise Montenegro as an independent state, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told reporters after their meeting on Monday.

The decision to recognise Montenegro will be adopted by the Government at a session that started immediately after the Mesic-Sanader meeting.

The Government's press office said in a statement the Government had forwarded a proposal to recognise Montenegro to the head of state. Mesic endorsed the Government's motion and his office sent Mesic's consent to the Government.

Montenegro declared independence after a referendum on May 21 at which 55.5 percent of the voters who went to the polls voted for independence.

So far, Montenegro was recognised by Iceland and Russia.
