ZAGREB, June 4 (Hina) - Croatia is ready and interested in developing good neighbourly relations and cooperation with Montenegro on the basis of equality and reciprocity, and it will start the process of recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations with Montenegro adjusted to that of the European Union, the Croatian government said in a statement on Sunday.

The Croatian government welcomes the democratic process of restoration of Montenegro's state sovereignty and independence, reads the statement, issued on the occasion of the adoption of a declaration on Montenegro's independence.

"Confident that a democratic, stable Montenegro, oriented towards Euro-Atlantic integration process, will be a factor of lasting peace and cooperation in this part of Europe, the Croatian government will initiate the procedure of recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations adjusted to that of the European Union."

The government joins in positive comments from the European Union and international institutions which have confirmed the legitimacy, lawfulness and democratic standards of Montenegro's path to independence.

Croatia confirms its readiness and interest in developing good neighbourly relations and cooperation with Montenegro on the basis of equality and reciprocity.

"Starting from Croatia's position and the latest statements by the Montenegrin leadership, the Government of the Republic of Croatia believes that the restored independence will provide a possibility for Montenegro to objectively assess the cause of and its role in the recent war against Croatia and on the basis of that assessment open a new chapter in the development of relations based on cooperation and respect, to the benefit of our citizens and in the interests of both countries," reads the statement.

The Croatian government also called on Montenegro and Serbia to complete the process of disassociation and define their future relations through dialogue, in their own interest and for the sake of a lasting peace and stability and their Euro-Atlantic prospects.
