ZAGREB, May 22 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Monday congratulated his Montenegrin counterpart Filip Vujanovic and all citizens of Montenegro on the results of yesterday's referendum on independence, Mesic's office said in a press release.

"By the will of the majority of its citizens, Montenegro is embarking on the path of independence, but I am sure, not separated from its neighbours, but in friendship and cooperation with them," Mesic said in the note.

"Although at the referendum the citizens of Montenegro chose between two basically different and opposing options, the winner is, can and must be only one: Montenegro," said Mesic.

He underlined that "Croatia will continue to build, now on new foundations, its already good relations with Montenegro, in the interest of both states, all of their citizens, but also the entire region".

Mesic said Croatia supported Montenegro's European aspirations and was ready to share the experience it acquired on its road to united Europe and was acquiring now in negotiations on European Union membership.

"I congratulate all citizens of Montenegro on the democratic maturity they expressed and I wish them all the best, progress and success, as well as life in peace and security in their state," read Mesic's note of congratulations.
