Sanader says Croatia to recognise Montenegro as independent state together with EU

ZAGREB, May 25 (Hina) - Croatia will recognise Montenegro as an independent state together with the European Union, but that country must first renounce its role in Serbian aggression against Croatia that was carried out in the 1990s, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Thursday at a session of his Cabinet which issued a special statement welcoming the decision of Montenegrin citizens on their country becoming independent.

We will not forget the past, but we wish to build a new future of peace and stability in Southeast Europe, Sanader said, hailing an apology from Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic to Croatia for the role of Montenegrin forces in the 1990s war.

The Croatian government is confident that an independent Montenegro will contribute to the further development of peace, cooperation and stability in this part of Europe, Sanader said.

He noted that the disassociation of Serbia and Montenegro should proceed according to all democratic standards, and called on the governments of the two countries to respect each other during that process.

The Croatian prime minister joined EU officials in assessments that Sunday's independence referendum was free and fair and that it marked an end to a process announced long before.

The referendum showed the democratic maturity of Montenegrin citizens and confirmed that the majority of people wanted independence. Croatia will recognise any decision of Montenegrin citizens, Sanader said.

In the statement the Croatian government expressed its full readiness and interest in developing good-neighbourly relations and cooperation with Montenegro based on mutual respect and joint efforts in promoting lasting peace in this part of Europe.
