Serbia will fight with all diplomatic and legal means available to defend its national interests and preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty, Tadic's office said in a statement.
Tadic reiterated his call for further talks on Kosovo, saying that only a compromise solution to the future status of Kosovo that would be acceptable to both parties, would ensure the long-term stability of the region.
Burns said that his country would support a declaration of independence by the people of Kosovo if the UN Security Council failed to adopt a new resolution. He, however, expressed hope that a new resolution would be adopted and that it would be followed by recognition of Kosovo.
Also on Tuesday, during a visit to the Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia, the US Ambassador to Belgrade, Michael Polt, said that the political position of the United States was that independence for Kosovo was the only available option and that the plan proposed by UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari was the only one that would be viable for Serbia and for the region.
Asked to comment on Burns's statement, Polt said that the Undersecretary of State had clearly presented US policy on Kosovo, reiterating that the United States wanted independence for Kosovo based on a new Security Council resolution.
