The leader of the DPA branch in Bujanovac, Sali Salihi, made the request in a statement issued on Monday, referring to the municipalities of Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja as "eastern Kosovo".
Salihi called on Serbian government officials and international representatives to secure, during the process of defining Kosovo's status, "a legal mechanism that will guarantee the Albanians living in Bujanovac, Presevo and Medvedja the exercise of their rights".
Salihi said that the Albanian community in the three municipalities had always wanted to unite with Kosovo and supported such a proposal at a referendum on March 1-2, 1992.
The head of the Serbian government's coordinating body for southern Serbia, Rasim Ljajic, said the request was completely unrealistic.
"All international representatives have stated explicitly that the issue of southern Serbia will be dealt with as part of the process of democratisation in Serbia and that it is separate from the negotiating process concerning Kosovo's status," Ljajic said.
The DPA is one of the three ethnic Albanian parties and it did not participate in the last parliamentary elections in Serbia. Its leader Ragmi Mustafa is the head of Presevo municipality.
