Fried says U.S. believes Serbs have future in Kosovo

PRISTINA, March 6 (Hina) - The proposal by UN special envoy Martti Ahtisaari concerning Kosovo's future status does not give any side everything they want but none of the sides should be left empty handed either, U.S. Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried said on Tuesday after his one-day visit to Serbia.

After talks with representatives of the predominantly Serb municipalities of Zvecan, Leposavic and Zubni Potok, Fried said that the position of the US government was that Serbs should have a future in Kosovo and that they should be able to live peacefully in their homes and towns.

Fried said that the 10 March talks in Vienna would be very important and that the Serb negotiating team should arrive with practical and serious proposals.

Ahtisaari's proposal is not final and it is not up to me to talk about it, he said. The best future for Serbia and Kosovo is that they jointly meet in a united Europe as friends and that these dark times be only a memory, the US diplomat said.
