Minister Draskovic comments on Kosovo

ZAGREB, March 2 (Hina) - Kosovo Serbs and Albanians are close to reaching a historic agreement on Kosovo but that solution must not humiliate either Serbia or the Albanian majority in the province, Serbia's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic said in Zagreb on Friday where he was attending an SEECP conference.

Draskovic said the compromise must ensure two things: there will be no attempt to forcibly reshape Serbia's "existing internationally recognised borders with the Republic of Albania and the Republic of Macedonia" and that the "rights of Serbs and Kosovo's non-Albanian ethnic communities" will be protected.

Draskovic expressed his concern over the "real danger" of what he called the secession of a part of Serbia's territorial integrity.

That would cause a great emotional shock and a sense of humiliation among the people in Serbia, he said, adding that insistence by Kosovo Albanian leaders on the independence of this breakaway province would not be a compromise but an extremist view.

Although he was present at the Zagreb conference of the South East European Cooperation Process, Kosovo Prime Minister Agim Ceku did not hold a speech and therefore he did not respond to Draskovic's statement.

On behalf of Kosovo, an official of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) addressed the event.
