LME slow by midsession, copper drifts from highs
LONDON, November 4 (Reuter) - Trading in base metals
remained quiet up to Monday's midsession on the LME, as recent
market leader copper range-traded ahead of Tuesday's inventory
data.
Traders said they expected another fall in LME stocks which
currently stand at six year lows of 123,700 tonnes, although
doubted the market would make any significant upside gains.
"The market has seen good drawdowns over recent months but
for whatever reason refuses to head higher," one LME floor
trader said.
Several traders were expecting stock withdrawals from
European warehouses, while they expected further deliveries into
Singapore.
Benchmark three months delivery copper was last at $1,965,
versus $1,958. Earlier the market peaked at $1,977.#
Nearby spreads remained tight. The cash to three months
backwardation was last at $50, unchanged from Friday's late
levels.
Elsewhere, tin bounced back from a fresh 17-month low of
$5,890 as trade buying shored up earlier sell-stop activity.
During the LME pre-market tin was mauled by fairly
aggressive selling as one market player attempted to spark
sell-stops below $5,900.
Traders said the tin market should now consolidate after
surviving the selling this morning. "It has been well supported
by the trade side of the market," one trader commented.
Last business was at $5,910, a loss of $65.
Zinc drifted back but continued to find support from recent
investment fund buying. Traders expected LME stocks to fall on
Tuesday. They are currently at 3-3/4 year lows. Three months was
last at $1,065, against $1,073.50.
Aluminium remained quiet and held support above $1,400.
Stocks are expected to rise on Tuesday. Last business was at
$1,419, down $6.
Nickel settled $85 lower at $7,105.
Alloy was last indicated at $1,270/75, little moved from
$1,275.
