Chicago futures surged on rumours that Brazil may impose an export tax on soybeans. However, Europe traders said they found this very hard to swallow. "I really can't see the Brazilian's handing the soybean market to the Americans on a plate," said one. "I can only think they want to price themselves out of the market otherwise they would not react to a daft rumour like this," said another trader. Brazilian crushers and the Agricultural Ministry both played down the rumour, saying the tax was unlikely and would be rejected by the ministry. Palm oil was steady but quiet ahead of the release on Saturday of the Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority's (PORLA) stocks, output and export date for end-February. In his last report before the PORLA figures, issued on Friday, Malaysian private forecast Ivan Wong projected local palm oil output at 509,000 tonnes, 11.8 percent down from January and against earlier forecasts of falls of 21 and 13 percent. Wong put stocks at 675,000 tonnes at end-February, against 696,272 at end-January. Soft oils close with soy oil 0.50 guilders up after Mar traded at 102.50 and Apr at 103.75 guilders. Rape oil sellers were one to 1.25 guilders higher after Apr traded at 104.50 and May/Jul and Aug/Oct at 105 guilders a 100 kilos fob ex-mill.
