"People were expecting a much higher opening on the oils after they saw the project "A" prices this morning," said one trader. "The problem with project "A" is that there are not many players and it can sometimes over-react. This is why a lot of people will wait for the main Chicago market to open before they do anything," said another. Traders said participation on the European market had been thin during the afternoon and any reaction to Chicago would come on Tuesday morning. Dutch soy and rape oil closed two guilders up and tradeless. Palm oil was quiet during the afternoon with this morning's higher close in Malaysia supporting prices. Prices in Malaysia rose on rumours that Pakistan may cut its import duty on edible oils and news that India has not increased import duty. Reports of a slowdown in Malaysian palm oil output during 1997 had no immediate effect on the market. An official from the Malaysian Palm Oil Registration and Licensing Authority (PORLA) said palm oil is unlikely to maintain its growth in 1997 owing to labour shortages and lower yields. Traders said this was more a longer term problem and was not likely to trigger a sustained rally. Crude palm oil cif Europe closed $2.50 up after Mar traded at $575 and Apr at $565 a tonne cif. Products finished unchanged to $5 up with no further business reported. Among lauric oils coconut oil closed unchanged to $5 up while palmlkernel oil was unchanged to $2.50 higher in tradeless markets.
