ZAGREB, Feb 25 (Hina) - The peaceful reintegration of the Croatian Danubian
area could not be halted. The influence of the Croatian police could already
be felt, you could enter the area, drive with Croatian license plates and
feel rather safe, the Croatian President's envoy at the government's Office
of Temporary Administration for the Establishment of Croatian Authority in
Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Srijem, Major General Slavko Baric,
said on Tuesday.
Still, we should not delude ourselves into thinking that, during the
UNTAES-implemented demilitarization, the Serbs surrendered all arms, Baric
told a public panel on peaceful reintegration organized in Zagreb by the
Croatian Officers Corps. One could refer to it as demobilization, rather
than demilitarization, he warned.
Croatia did not want Serbs to leave the Danubian area, Baric pointed
out. The Croatian government's letter of intent was intended to show that
Croatia guaranteed all their rights, he said, adding that it was up to them
to decide whether they wished to leave.
Baric confirmed that a unit of special anti-terrorist police,
comprised of Croats and Serbs, had entered the Danubian area. The unit,
under the command of Transitional Administrator Jacques Klein, would fight
crime.
Commenting on UNTAES' mandate, Baric assessed that there was no
example in the world of such efficient administration on the part of the UN,
nor so brief a mandate.
