"The government extends its sincere condolences to the
family and friends of the" officer from Belgium, and wished a
speedy recovery to the wounded UN members.
"The incident is undoubtedly a result of a delaying
strategy promoted by some local Serb leaders in eastern
Slavonia," Nobilo stressed.
Most of the local residents recognized the benefits of
the peaceful reintegration and searched for ways to realize
the rights offered to them by the Croatian government.
The local Serbs "have most to gain from peaceful
reintegration that the Croatian government has offered to
them, and most to lose by the folly, suffering and violence
that some of their leaders bring to them," Nobilo said in his
statement issued in New York.
