WASHINGTON, 30 Jan (Hina) - The U.N. Security Council in New York
should Thursday afternoon adopt a presidential statement supporting
recommendations by the U.N. Transitional Administrator in eastern
Slavonia, General Jacques Klein, on the completion of peaceful
reintegration of the Croatian Danubian area. #L#
General Klein, who arrived in New York for regular
consultations with the Security Council, informed Contact Group
member-states last night about the situation in the Croatian
Danubian area.
The Security Council is expected to stress in its statement
that the implementation of elections within set deadlines and in
line with Klein's decision will be possible if Croatian authorities
meet their commitments concerning the completion of the process of
issuing Croatian papers to all voters, and complete necessary
technical arrangements.
The Council is also to stress the importance of cooperation of
local Serbs.
It is expected that the presidential statement will support
the Croatian Government Letter of Intent.
General Klein stated last night that he expected the U.N.
Security Council to send with its presidential statement a clear
signal to local Serbs to accept the existing proposal for elections
in the area.
According to that proposal, elections will be held on 16
March, after the Croatian government has fulfilled its obligations.
