The Croatian Culture Ministry Centre for the Protection of
Croatian Cultural Heritage said in a statement on Sunday that
Croatia had signed the Convention, together with 156 other
countries, at a UN Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1996.
The Convention had become effective on 29 December 1997 and
Croatia had become its full member 90 days after it had submitted
to the UN an instrument of ratification of the Convention on 7
October 1996, the statement said.
The Convention should contribute to a more rational
exploitation of natural resources and ensure the protection of
species and their habitats.
Under the Convention, Croatia is to develop a national
strategy and an action plan for the protection of its biological
and environmental diversity.
Under the organization of the Centre for the Protection of
Croatian Cultural and Natural Heritage, the document will be drawn
up by various experts and scientists and should result in a review
of the biological and environmental diversity in Croatia, as well
as in measures for their protection and sustenance, including a
list of priorities.
