"French citizens yesterday rejected with a convincing majority the draft European Constitution... Opponents of European-oriented Croatia will probably try to use this to instigate anti-European sentiments among our citizens too."
"The project of European unification, a millennium project unprecedented in history, was not questioned by the French referendum in any way. The fundamental commitment to completing that project was not questioned either. In other words, the continuation of expansion of the European Union to those parts of the Old Continent which it still does not include will not and cannot be questioned."
"For Croatia, the French 'no' to the EU Constitution does not change anything essential. Our goal must remain the same - full membership in the EU. However, yesterday's event imposes on us too a responsibility to contribute to discussions on how to continue and complete the great European project," Mesic said, adding that Croatia would continue on its European path.
"United Europe has no alternative. Just as there is no alternative to our place in a uniting Europe," the President said in the statement.
