BELGRADE, April 15 (Hina) - A former member of the Scorpions
paramilitary unit, Dejan Demirovic, was released from custody in Belgrade on
Saturday after the local Prosecutor's Office dropped charges of involvement in
a 1999 war crime in Kosovo. Demirovic was released due to lack of
evidence, said Ivana Ramic, spokeswoman for Belgrade's District Court.
Demirovic was extradited last year from Canada, having fled in 2001.
Another former Scorpion, Sasa Cvjetan, was sentenced to 20 years in
prison last year for the same crime -- the murder of 14 Albanian civilians,
including children, and the wounding of six Albanian children in Podujevo in
March 1999.
