Court turns down request by prosecution to extend detention for ex-seven soldiers

Autor: mses
ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - The Zagreb County Court on Monday turned down a request by the prosecution to extend the detention for seven former Croatian Army soldiers, indicted for war crimes against Serb prisoners of war in western Bosnia.

The court dismissed the prosecution's request for the prolongation of the detention of seven former members of the "Pume" Guard Brigade, who ware taken in custody on 21 October 2009, according to the court's spokesman Kresimir Devicic.

It is now on the Supreme Court to decide on an appeal in the event that the prosecution has forwarded it against the Zagreb County Court's ruling.

No comment was available today from the Zagreb County Office of the Chief State Prosecutor on whether it had already appealed the Zagreb Court's decision on the release of the seven men accused of the execution of six Serb prisoners of war during the 1995 operation code-named "Maestral 2" near the western Bosnian town of Glamoc.

Following the order of the then commander of the 7th brigade called "Pume", General Ivan Korade, the brigade's former deputy commander, Emil Crncec and members -- Nenad Jurinac, Tihomir Savoric, Anto Novacic, Robert Precehtjer, Goran Gaca and Robert Bevak -- executed five soldiers of the Bosnian Serb forces on 9 and 10 September in Mlinista and Halapici near the western Bosnian town of Glamoc. One of the six victims of the execution by firing squad is not yet identified.
