When stocks data was released in the morning prices had already recovered well above Thursday's afternoon kerb close of $1,896 and wavered in the tight range during official trading. Prices ended the morning kerb at $1,914, up $18. "I'm perplexed. Stocks have come down a total of about 35,000 tonnes recently but the market doesn't seem to be reacting at all," said analyst Robin Bahr of broker Brandeis. Stocks fell 9,925 tonnes to 229,575 tonnes. This compares to 275,275 tonnes in early September just before stocks began dropping again after over a month of rises. Prices at that time were largely at the same levels as now. One could argue, however, that the stock falls have been underpinning the market, keeping prices from revisiting the $1,745 post-Sumitomo lows, Bahr added. The bulk of stocks draw came from Hamburg, but traders say that it could be going to the Far East in an arbitrage play with the Shanghai exchange. The cash/threes spread moved into backwardation, indicated at $5/$6 after trading level at the Thursday afternoon close. Some of the tightness was due to trade-based profit-taking in the spread, traders said. Aluminium stabilised after dipping to a fresh low for the year on Thursday, ending the morning kerb at $1,357, up $5. Stocks rose 8,550 tonnes but that was already factored into the price, traders said. Many chartists and analysts say the market should take a breath for the time being, but players were divided on later direction. Nickel made an effort at the upside after stocks fell by 306 tonnes, the first net draw in 6-1/2 weeks. Prices touched $7,160, but ended only $30 higher at $7,130. Tin finished the kerb little changed at $6,045, up $5, after its plunge to $5,900 on Tuesday. "Recent commission house and fund selling seems to have run out of momentum, and for the moment the market looks oversold. Technical indicators are pushing higher, which we feel will lead to short-covering," analyst William Adams at Rudolf Wolff said. Lead also barely moved, recovering from its trip to a near-seven month low earlier in the week. It finished at $762/63 after $764 on Thursday, capped by resistance at $765. Zinc ended the day firmly within its $1,014-$1,024 range seen for the past two weeks. Last midday business was at $1,020, up $1.50. Alloy was quiet and barely moved at $1,210 versus $1,208/10.
