Copper again led the way lower, tumbling under $1,900, while tin, lead, and aluminium also fell below important technical standpoints as bearish sentiment swept from one market to another, they said. "To some extent it is a pure sentiment play. People want to sell copper and that spills over everywhere else. If you are going to play the market you play it from the short side mostly," one said. Warehouse stock data earlier in the session was potentially supportive for metals such as copper, aluminium and lead, but the impact was muted once copper turned lower with a vengeance. Copper stocks fell by 7,825 tonnes and further falls are being forecast. But with the market again in a contango and Wednesday October option declarations not likely to throw up surprises, a mid-morning rally failed near $1,930. "It really needed to get back to $1,950, and once it became obvious that was out of bounds some of the funds were selling," another trader said. Three months prices hit a low of $1,890 before bargain-hunting day-traders stepped in and raised the market back up to $1,900 a tonne by the close of the kerb, still down $28 from Monday. As always with copper prior to an option expiry, there is an element of uncertainty, but the general outlook is poor and $1,875 is being targeted, traders said. Aluminium basically ignored a surprising stock fall of 950 tonnes, and slumped to a new 2-1/4 year low of $1,357. Consumer offtake is low key and the general trend in inventory movements is upwards. Prices bottomed out at $1,357, but still closed $14.50 softer at $1,363. If $1,350 is breached, technicians expect $1,300 to be visited. Tin was sent packing down to 16-month lows of $5,900 when the breach of $6,000 triggered a host of sell-stops. Again there was little fundamental behind the fall, and last kerb trade was at $5,940, down $80 a tonne. Lead extended Monday's falls, and dropped to a new seven-month low of $745, despite a 1,600-tonne decline in stocks. Last trade was at $750, down $6, and a conclusive break under the level could see much steeper declines, they said. Nickel similarly fell back, but managed to hold the $7,000 level, although last morning business was at $7,045, a $55 loss from Monday. Stocks rose again by 192 tonnes -- a trend seen continuing. Zinc was the exception to the trend this morning, and was unchanged at $1,016 a tonne. Traders see this market nicely esconsed in a $1,015/30 range, with price falls outside this band meeting trade support. Alloy was marked down with primary, and was placed at $1,210/12 a tonne, against an overnight $1,230. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 01. listopada 1996.
