Metals claw back some losses at LME midsession
LONDON, Sept 12 (Reuter) - Base metal prices moved away from
earlier lows during low-key LME ring trading on Wednesday but
overall sentiment remained poor and further declines are likely,
traders said.
Short-covering and some bargain-hunting buying helped copper
up from early two-month lows and aluminium inched above new
two-year lows, injecting some life into the rest of the complex.
But any decent rally will be treated as a sell opportunity,
traders said.
"It just does not look good at the moment. There is very
little physical buying and once the shorts cover they (markets)
are likely to head lower. Also, there is very little volume
around," one said.
Copper was initially under the cosh, after taking out $1,900
overnight, and prices sagged to a low of $1,862 before finding
some solace in the mid-$1870s. Last kerb trade was at $1,870, a
loss of $45 from Wednesday's kerb.
Nearby premiums remain at low levels and are not a cause for
concern, with the overal cash/threes backwardation around $12.
Aluminium price moves were not as great as on Wednesday,
although the market still notched up a fresh low of $1,429
before concluding the kerb at $1,432, a $6.50 decline from
yesterday.
The nickel market kept one eye on problems at Norilsk, as
well as the upcoming labour contract at Inco's Manitoba
facilities, but still back-tracked with LME sentiment negative.
Three months closed the kerb at $7,530, down $135.
Zinc threatened to break under the $1,000 level at one
point, but was helped by some trade buying and closed the
session at $1,013, up $8 from the morning low, and a $4 gain
from Wednesday.
However, tin continued to decline, having lost its hold on
the $6,200 level yesterday, and was $65 easier at $6,140.
Lead and alloy were quiet and both held relatively steady at
$813/814 and $1,240/45 a tonne respectively.
