Traders said October option expiries passed routinely on copper and did not impact on the market which rose on shortcovering from early levels near $1,880. After a series of rebuffs at $1,900 the market broke above this level during the kerb, aided by New York values, with three months concluding the session at $1,909 a tonne, a $19 advance from Tuesday afternoon. Little emerged in the way of fundamental impetus for copper, but traders noted the Tsumeb smelter dispute is still ongoing. Also, a mediator has been appointed for Polish producer KGHM after the Solidarity union went on strike alert on Monday in a wage dispute with the Board. Other metals cued off market-leader copper throughout the session, but did not look particularly promising. Aluminium rose to fill a chart gap between $1,371 and $1,375, concluding the kerb at $1,376, up $8.50. The market had been oversold and once the rally stalls is seen testing $1,350/60, traders said. Nickel fluctuated either side of $7,000, but managed to avoid a downside test of key support bunched just above $6,900. Last kerb trade was at $7,045, up $40. Tin clawed its way back above $6,000, finishing the morning at $6,010, up $35. Lead and zinc were quietly stable and closed the kerb at $760/761 and $1,019. Alloy was quoted at $1,220/25.
