"It looks like it's returning to the summer range. It's tried to escape both from the top and bottom," one floor trader said. Three months prices ended the morning kerb at $1,943 per tonne, down $14 from Friday's close and in the middle of a $1,900-$1,970 band that hemmed in prices over the summer. In the first ring, prices dipped to a low of $1,927 on disappointed long liquidation after the market failed to sustain a three-week spike to $1,990 on Friday. A possibility remained that players would have another go at the upside in the run-up to the options declaration on Wednesday, but the market's inability to hold higher levels showed that it had lost a lot of momentum, dealers said. "There is nothing like the panic we had mid-year, and that is reflected in the lack of follow-through buying on Friday," one options dealer said. Options dealers were uncertain whether there was much substance behind talk that one player had a firm grip on the $2,000 calls. One said this was possible since people were buying $2,050 and $2,100 calls on Friday. The buying may have been by those who were not able to get their hands on $2,000 material. The cash/threes spread inched back into contango, ending at $1 compared to level on Friday afternoon. Lead slid to a fresh 2-1/2 month nadir of $761, but found support and ended the kerb at $767, down $11. Much of the weakness was due to stops triggered in thin trading, one floor trader said. Chartist Harry Creates of broker AMT said a close below a secondary uptrend of $774 was bearish. Aluminium lost ground, slipping under the psychological $1,400 level then probing towards recent 2-1/4 year lows of $1,387. But it managed a rebound off its low of $1,388, finishing the morning at $1,394, a $15 loss from Friday. Nickel got the wind knocked out of it as workers at Inco's Manitoba facility agreed to go back to work overnight. "Technically the $7,150 should have been good support, but the market was still a bit long," one floor trader said, adding that speculative long liquidation hit prices. "There was a little bit of buying at the lows for 1998," he added. Three month metal sunk to a low of $7,090, but revived toward the close, ending the morning at $7,160, down $50. Zinc shed $7 to finish at $1,017 while tin closed weaker at $6,040/50 versus $6,070. Alloy follow the primary market lower to $1,232/35 from $1,245/50. FRANCUSKA BURZA KOVINA - 30. rujna 1996.
